The idea of the male gaze applies to women as well. Women can act sexist against women and act as misogynists as well. It can also be seen in terms of self-colonization. Ahem.<br /><br />So an alternative to your sexism hypothesis might be that, back in 2010, she had calculated (perhaps incorrectly) that there was more revenue to be generated from trying to sell the bikes as fashion accessories or status symbols than as actual bikes to be actually used. Note that if this was true, it doesn't necessarily follow that she herself held these sexist beliefs, only that she thought she could take advantage of their preponderance to rake in the $$$. <br /><br />Of course it was ridiculous, and I share the distaste of the "ivory white walking clothes horse" model of what an Asian woman is supposed to be. But surely the reason Giant has changed their marketing approach to women's bikes is... capitalism: the desire to rake in the $$$.
